Matrimonial meltdowns are like failed business ventures where everyone wants to cut their losses. A three-day, in-class training course aims to equip financial advisors to help their clients do just that, as the Academy of Financial Divorce Specialists teams up with two other organizations.

Qualified financial professionals attending either the Canadian Institute of Financial Planners (CIFPs) Convention in June or the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP) Symposium in October have the opportunity immediately following these events to take the course leading to the Financial Divorce Specialists (FDS) designation.

Linda Cartier, president of the Academy of Financial Divorce Specialists says financial planners interested in the program can attend the in-class training in the same venues as the conferences in Ottawa and Toronto, respectively. There is a 20% reduction in the cost of the training for those registered for the conferences.

The course is open to those holding a recognized financial planning or accounting professional designation, and considers the many factors involved in separation and divorce, including division of assets, issues of child and spousal support, plus insurance, business, retirement and estate matters.

The course also tackles the legal process and how to illustrate the effects of client choice to demonstrate financial outcomes now and into the future. This results in better informed and satisfied clients avoiding compliance and legal issues and the likely protection of assets to the greatest degree possible.

The designation is recognized by the Financial Planners Standards Council and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. For more information on registration details visit www.afds.ca.
