Between the U.S. government shutdown and the debt-ceiling countdown, investors have a lot to be jittery about.

Right now, no other market is as jumpy as bonds. It doesn’t help that fixed-income investors have been reacting to the prospect of tapering by pulling money out of bonds in record amounts since May.

The bond market is also getting hit by new regulations and capital requirements that have pushed banks to scale back their bond trading businesses.
