Building relationships and getting access to new business are two advantages of working for free, says the Financial Times.
Since the economic downturn, providing pro-bono services and freelancing have become increasingly popular ways to make your name in an industry; in the last two years, freelancing has increased by 45% in the EU.
While working for free can help you gain contacts and experience, it also has its detriments, FT says.

It may imply that you aren’t confident enough in your abilities to work for a fee, or suggest that your work isn’t valuable.
So while offering services for free may be beneficial sometimes–like to gain credibility or gain entry into a new niche–make sure you benefit in another way.
