In 1997, a young customer tried to impress his Valentine with a fancy French dinner, but couldn’t pay his bill. This month, he paid his debt, reports Tanya Mendis for KOAT Albuquerque (New Mexico).

The owner of Le Café Miche, Claus Hjortkjaer, discreetly settled his young customer’s bill when the diner found he was short $40, Mendis reports.

In May, that same customer returned and gave Hjortkjaer $100 – that’s a 9.5% interest rate, compounded annually.

“Sometimes it pays off to be a nice guy,” Hjortkjaer told Mendis. “It made me feel good. I went and bought myself a bouquet of flowers.”
