One Finnish businessman was recently fined €54,000. Why? Because he was driving 15 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Indeed, in Finland fines for speeding, shoplifting and violating securities law are determined based on a taxpayer’s income, reports The Atlantic.

For instance, in the above case, the police officer would’ve checked a database to determine the businessman’s income, estimated how much spending money he had for one day, and divided that by two. Then, he would’ve multiplied that amount based on the country’s rules for how many days the businessman must go without that money — 12 days for going 15 miles per hour over the speed limit.
