Canada’s workforce isn’t aging as dramatically as Japan’s, says Avery Shenfeld, chief economist of CIBC World Markets, in a new report.

But, he explains, “every province east of Ontario has seen a drop in its working-age population in the past year, and in some cases, going back several years.” Plus, most of our domestic workforce growth is based on the entrance of non-permanent residents.

At the same time, Canada’s resource sector is experiencing a “less-than-super [growth] cycle.”
