When I was younger, I looked forward to Lunar New Year for the long noodles, the whole fish (my parents always saved my sister and me the cheeks), the family get-togethers and, of course, the red packets filled with cash.
Thanks to a combination of parental influence and innate conscientiousness, I rarely spent that lucky money — it usually went straight to my bank account. By age 14, I’d saved my first $1,000 from red packets and summer jobs. I carry that savings habit with me today, and Lunar New Year always makes me thankful for my early money lessons.
