Advisor.ca congratulates assistant editor Katie Keir on her Kenneth R. Wilson Awards nomination as Best New Journalist for 2012.

The KRWs, the Oscars of Canadian business journalism, added the category for new journalists to its award roster this year. She goes head-to-head with colleague Regan Reid, an associate editor at Canadian Insurance Top Broker.

The 2008 University of Toronto English and drama graduate joined Advisor Group in January 2012 and proved her mettle throughout the year as the web team’s editorial ops backbone. Throughout 2012, Keir produced dozens of web articles, along with numerous print features for Advisor’s Edge Report.

Then, she dove into feature writing, producing several shorter features for flagship magazine Advisor’s Edge before writing her full-length nominating story “When Good Partners Go Bad.” Keir also produced the magazine’s first Editor’s Note by a non-manager in the publication’s history.

Keir says she got her literary start at age 11 with a horror novel series, double spaced on five letter-sized pages, called Double Murder. And she’s no stranger to stiff competition, having scored the English awards in grades 8 and 12.

She and colleague Reid are rumoured to have a secret bet on the outcome.
