The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) has created a special whistleblower office and program that lets employees report tips about misconduct, the regulator said Tuesday.

The adoption of ASC Policy 15-602 Whistleblower Program creates an Office of the Whistleblower and lets employees report tips about an employer’s securities-related misconduct, the regulator said in a release. Tips can include information on insider trading, market manipulation, fraud, or issues relating to corporate disclosure or financial statements.

The program protects whistleblowers through new provisions in Alberta’s Securities Act requiring that a whistleblower’s identity is kept confidential and “can only be disclosed in limited circumstances,” the release said. The program also protects whistleblowers or their relatives from reprisal. The ASC can take enforcement action in the case of a reprisal.
