Baby Boomers donate more to charities than other generations in the U.S., finds a study by Blackbaud, which provides nonprofit software and accounting management.

In fact, Baby Boomers in the U.S. contribute 43% of all funds donated in America, with 72% of this group giving an average $1,212 per year. Gen X accounts for 20%, while Gen Y represents 11%.

Additional findings from the study include:

  • All generations value a mix of online and offline communications and giving channels;
  • Crowdfunding and peer-to-peer fundraising are gaining traction, largely with Gen X and Y;
  • 62% of Gen Y donates through mobile phone, compared to 47% of Gen X;
  • Boomers prefer to donate through their workplaces (46%), while those over 68-years-old give in response to direct mail solicitation (52%).
