Batman fans around the world are known to hoard related merchandise – the suit, tees, action figures, and even briefs – but Batman superfans, apparently, are driven more by the real deal. That is, the original Batmobile with a price tag of $4.2 million.

Last weekend, one such fan from Arizona bought the superhero conveyance – complete with a car phone, parachutes and other Bat gadgets – used in the 1960s TV series, says a report in the Toronto Star.

The iconic two-seater was snapped up by Rick Champagne of Phoenix at the end of “a flurry of spirited bidding at the Scottsdale, Arizona, auction.”

Investors with an eye for atypical assets may find it noteworthy that the concept car was first bought in 1955 by George Barris, a designer of custom cars, for just $1.

It took the designer, who owned the car until its sale Saturday, 15 days and $15,000 to turn it into its screen avatar.
