Macklem is currently Dean of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and has served as senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, sharing responsibility with the governor and four deputy governors for monetary policy and the Bank’s role in promoting financial stability.

He was seen by many top economists as the most likely successor to Mark Carney as governor of the Bank of Canada.
