Over the last week, consumers across North America have been focused on filling their shopping carts and checking off their Christmas to-do lists.

But today is Giving Tuesday, a national movement that’s focused on giving and volunteering. The movement was started a few years ago by a team of organizations, including GIV3 and CanadaHelps.org, following a similar initiative in the U.S. in 2012.

According to CanadaHelps.org, “the third annual Giving Tuesday increased charitable donations in Canada on top of the previous GivingTuesday’s lift, for a total increase of more than 300%. CanadaHelps also also saw a 28% increase in new monthly donors [in] 2015.”
