Since layoffs are taboo in Japan, reports The New York Times, companies there often have to find ways to amuse workers after they’re no longer needed due to restructuring.

Take Sony employee Shusaku Tani, it adds: Tani worked at one of the gadget company’s plants for more than 30 years (in its technology centre, where he helped create the magnetic tape for videos and cassettes). His position was eliminated a few years ago, but he refused to accept an early retirement package.

So, he now gets paid to spend his days reading in a “boredom room” at the plant. Read more.
