Kids don’t understand how exhausting the holidays are for parents, says GoGirl Finance editor–in-chief Sarah Chang in a recent column.

She has two daughters and says she’s heard about Santa non-stop since Thanksgiving. But this year, she’s making a change: Chang wants to adjust her children’s expectations—and simultaneously save her bank account—by getting her daughters to focus more on giving and compassion.

In her column, she offers suggestions such as:

Inspire charitable attitudes: Let your kids know others aren’t as lucky by getting them to help you pick out toys and food for charity drives.

Make room for new toys: Start a winter cleaning tradition by donating old toys your kids don’t use. Also start conversations about how much they really need.
