The balance between return and risk is often equated with the trade-off between health and exercise. While all investors have an appetite for greater wealth (being healthy), they also have a limited tolerance for risk (exercise). Unfortunately, risk is a difficult, often abstract, concept for investors — especially when it comes to investment selection. As a result, risk is usually ignored altogether.

“I’m bullish on the Canadian stock market,” says Darren Lekkerkerker, manager of the Canadian equity sub-portfolio of the Fidelity Canadian Balanced Fund and co-manager of the Fidelity Global Natural Resources Fund.

The Canadian marketplace offers a range of opportunities for impressive returns, but there’s little consensus on where those opportunities lie.

Canadian investors may be showing a little more appetite for risk, with a vast majority telling a recent survey they would invest in growth-oriented mutual funds over the next year.
